- A dimension on a drawing is two things at once: a size, and a statement of how much that size may vary from part to part. A reader who takes only the first has half of it.Every tolerance can be turned into two numbers, the largest and the smallest the feature may be. Once a reader can do that, everything else in this book follows from arithmetic: the fits between a hole and a shaft, the way tolerances add along a chain, and the scale that turns a drawn length into a real one.The drawing is the record. A dimension is read, never measured off the paper.WHAT IS INSIDEPart 1: what a dimension is. An ordinary untoleranced size takes the applicable general tolerance when the drawing's notes or standard make that general tolerance applicable to it.
