Drama Editorial Review
The American [DVD] is a visually appealing adaptation of Henry James' work, featuring a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes that includes notable contributions from actors like Aisling O'Sullivan and Diana Rigg. Although it has received criticism for not capturing the intricate dialogue that defines the original novel, fans of Masterpiece Theatre may still find some merit in its production values. However, many reviews indicate a disconnect between the film's execution and the depth of the source material, leading to it being perceived as a disjointed experience rather than a faithful representation of its literary origins.
